Checking Your Hosts File

The hosts file is a computer file used by an operating system to map hostnames to IP addresses. The hosts file is a plain text file, and is conventionally named hosts.
The location of the hosts file in the file system hierarchy varies by operating system. It is usually named hosts, without an extension.


The hosts file may present an attack vector for malicious software. The file may be modified, for example, by adware, computer viruses, or trojan horse software to redirect traffic from the intended destination to sites hosting malicious or unwanted content. The widespread computer worm Mydoom.B blocked users from visiting sites about computer security and antivirus software and also affected access from the compromised computer to the Microsoft Windows Update website.

Checking for Modifications
Navigate to c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.
Open the hosts file with a text editor like notepad. Hosts will not have a file extension.
Compare your hosts file with the Microsoft defaults listed below. If yours is different, it has been modified.
Resetting the Hosts File to Microsoft Defaults
To reset the Hosts file back to the default, follow these steps:

Navigate to c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
Rename the Hosts file to "Hosts.old".
Create a new default hosts file:
Right-click an open space in the c:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc folder, point to New, click Text Document.
Enter hosts for the filename, press Enter.
Click Yes to confirm that the file name extension will not be .txt.
Open the new Hosts file in a text editor, such as Notepad.
Copy the following text to the file:
