Testing:
Popped up the stop watch and auto-attacked for 10 minutes.
Findings:
Damage is increased by Versatility only.
The damage can critically hit, initial damage and return can crit or not-crit independently
The damage is dealt twice, once on proc and then on return.
The shadow waves dealing damage are in a Cross, the shadows move outwards and then back to the location that it proc'd at.
The PPM is quite difficult to nail down, and managed to proc 12 times in 10 minutes of auto-attack, why i say it is difficult to nail-down the exact ppm is because at 8:37 of my timer it managed to proc 4 times before reaching 9:27, where as on minute 3:35 it took till 5:30 to proc again, which suggests this trinket is highly unreliable.
Conclusion
Unless mastery is your primary stat i would heavily suggest NOT to use this trinket at single mob fights, even if mastery is your primary stat this trinket may be too unreliable to be useful, if the procs came at a steady rate this trinket may be good for single-target fights. I would only recommend this in fights with a lot of adds or AoE encounters, but bare in mind you may suffer quite a loss of DPS in the single target phase as this trinket has no primary stat.
Dungeon Testing Conclusion
This trinket was 4th in my damage done on a single target boss fight with 12 procs, understandable the fight wasn't 10 minutes long and i had a high rate of procs. also noticed it procs from spells such as Fel Rush and Glaive Throw so the ranged abilities of a demon hunter may proc this.
